Geophysical modelling takes to the cloud

by Jessica Kirby

Technology company Geosoft released its VOXI Earth Modelling software this spring, representing the latest in three-dimensional geophysical technology. The cloud-based inversion software generates 3D voxel models from airborne or ground gravity and magnetic data.

The software has a leg up on healthy competitors by negating the need for expert modellers. VOXI is accessible by geophysicists, resulting in speed, usability and accessibility.

Cloud technology allows for complex geo-computing functions with minimal drain on the explorer’s personal computer systems. Included in the first release is the Geosoft magnetization vector inversion (MVI) modelling technique, which allows the magnetization direction to vary within the model and take into account the combined effects of remanence, demagnetization, anisotropy and induced magnetization.

The result is a more realistic representation of rock magnetization, which is the fundamental rock property measured with the magnetic method.
